Over the last 7 years of sourcing, trade and manufacturing in China and Asia I had the chance to see an extended number of possible risk that may affect the final output of a production.
One that get often neglected is packaging and packing operation.
Those two elements are important because they may direct affect product regarding damaging. In a result it may bring trouble to buyer and customer.
Some common mistake I found:
1./ PACKAGING IS NOT ADAPTED TO PRODUCT
For example if you purchase in China a product that weight 5-10 kg and that you pack it with a very thin paper box without any protection inside such a polystyrene foam, then you may end up with products being broken during transportation especially if the goods are not loaded directly into a container at manufacturer place but are transferred by truck to the warehouse of the forwarder.
2./ EXPORT CARTONS ARE OVERLOADED AND TOO THIN
I also see quite often find out some suppliers loading cartons with a high weight and size. In a result, when the cartons are transported and manipulated, carton get frequently damaged and open by themselves because the force applied on the side of the carton.
It is important to create some carton well calibrated to the size and weight of your product.
3./ PACKING OPERATIONS
One frequent cause of product being damaged during manufacturing in China is the damaging of the product itself during packing operation: for example if you are packing pan into carton box with different metal parts, and that parts are not packed according to the design then it may result some collision between parts that may destroy the coating or the paint. I have seen this myself at one of our supplier in the past for fondue set, all the goods were damaged because the workers didn’t follow the packing instructions and it damaged part of the coating . The supplier had to rework all the goods to be able to ship.
4./ TRANSPORTATION OPERATION
When goods are not packed yet and when a manufacturer is not applying lean manufacturing principles properly it is quite frequent the number of move to do between the different process to be increased hence increasing the risk to get part to be affected. I remember one of our manufacturer of BBQ made in metal sheet that get coated after bending and cutting, and the assembled. The manufacturer between the coating process and the assembly process was transporting the just coated part directly into basket without covering the part. In a result, due to vibration during transportation the coated parts were interfering with each other and were scratching and damaging the coated part. The manufacturer had to rework all the part before shipment.
All those examples indicate why a proper packing and packaging in China and Asia is important and how not taking care of it can bring some substantial problem.
And you what is your experience about it ?
