Verify Quality of Food in Asia

How to avoid a food poisoning with the food packaging?

In order to ensure that all materials that may come into contact with food are safe, you must perform a lab test food contact. All materials in contact with food, such as packaging, crockery, cutlery, glassware, ceramics and receptacles should be safe and should not transfer any of the ingredients in foodstuffs. Food packaging materials must be harmless to human health or change the composition, the taste or aroma of the food.

A  article published in July 2014 by the Food Packaging Forum Foundation in Zurich, noted at least 175 chemicals that come into contact with our food. Some of them are related to chronic diseases or endocrine disruption.

For you, Asia Quality Control, noted many elements disturbing in the composition of our materials that come into contact with our food and their dangers.

  •  Phthalates and Biphenyl A, two families of chemicals are used in the manufacture of various plastics. They have a similar configuration of the hormones. They can interact with receptor for some of them. They can altered our hormone balance – there is talk of Mimetic hormone activity and endocrine disruptions
  • BPA is also a component of epoxy resins, this flexible varnish applied by heating inside metal cans to ensure tightness and microbiological safety of food. There is also the resin in the metal cover glass jars (such as Baby food jars or glass canning) in glass bottle caps, inside the cans and kettles say aluminum. The risks are skin irritation caused by the resins, but even more by the hardeners. Contact dermatitis, for the most sensitizing resins (rather than hardeners), with possible infringements of the face (including eye …). Occupational dermatitis is observed in exposed workers. These resins do not appear to induce asthma or cancer. However, a single case of contact dermatitis evolving into cancerous lesion is observed.
  •  The use of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a non-recyclable plastic, is also of concern. This fluoropolymer, known under the name of Teflon, is a suitable release liner to a poor cooking fat. If the PTFE is stable up to 260 ° C; beyond, it degrades. Its release properties are then altered, and this degradation causes an emanation of disturbing toxic fluorine gas for fragile bodies. Moreover PFOA or perfluorooctanoic acid, is a sort of industrial glue to hold Teflon, including collage is almost impossible without it because of its properties. This “glue” was recognized as carcinogenic to laboratory animals. It crosses the placenta in pregnant women and causes of congenital diseases, disorders of the immune and digestive systems. A Danish study published in 2009 showed a correlation between PFOA levels in the blood and male infertility.

Knowing that the materials in contact with food can cause security risks, strict rules were adopted in regard to materials in contact with food, especially in the EU and the US, where all materials contact with food export to the EU or the United States must be tested and certified.  One of our net surfers wanted to share his experience on packaging food products. Indeed, he found a silica gel pack ill-conditioned. Either the silica gel is not harmful for health unless if the human swallows it. If a human swallows it he risks a deteriorating his intestinal wall and he risks to have an ulcer.
